- Version 2.21 -

- PREVIEW -

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Better than ever...
Remlap KnowledgeBASE 2.21 has now been released as a Freeware. Having rewritten large parts of this application, I have been able to not just consolidate and tweak the vast array of new features which made version 2.11 such a success but, make the software engines faster and more responsive than in any previous version. Gone is the problem of the application running slowly on some system configurations and gone too is the erroneous loading of document when scrolling down the Document Titles List. Students too will appreciate the Word Count feature which is useful in keeping track of the size of an assignment. The Image flicker problem has also been resolved in version 2.21.

The major addition to version 2.21 was the design and development of KnowledgeBASE Companion. This came about following an email from a KnowledgeBASE user who asked for a feature whereby he could add content from his web browser directly into a KB Document, without leaving the browser window. While this request is programically fairly easy, using a conventional IE Toolbar and a Firefox Extension, it did through-up one major problem. What about those who use Opera, AOL and Mozilla browsers? They would effectively be iced-out of this feature or at least be forced into using a browser which was not their first choice. It soon became clear that, to embrace all of the KB user-base with this feature, I needed to build an application which could interface with all of these browsers. A kind of cross-browser toolbar, for want of a better description. But one thing was clear, I was entering unchartered waters and I was going to have to develop a very unique application, from the ground up.

And so KnowledgeBASE Companion was born; the first application to interface with all web browsers by placing a virtual button onto the browser window title-bar.

Clicking the button unrolls the Main Ribbon across the title-bar (see below).

From her the end-user can opt to unroll a variety of other ribbons including:

  • Easy access to view any RSS news feed they are subscribed to.

  • Browse the SHOUTcast Radio website and have any selection streamed.

  • Copy online content directly into a KnowledgeBASE Document without leaving the browser window.

Content is simply dragged and dropped onto the KB Clipboard. In addition to being able to copy web content (text and pictures) into the Current Document (doc title displayed at the top of the ribbon), content can be added to a New Document with the end-user being prompted for a new Doc Title. The whole process is effortless and the end-user never has to leave the browser window.

And did I forget to mention, when you have a spare moment KB Companion comes with a first class Sudoku puzzle generator?

In short KB Companion equals News, Information, Excellent Tunes and an easy method of adding content from your browser into your documents.
